Galeana is a farming municipio in northwestern Chihuahua, on Federal Highway 10 between Nuevo Casas Grandes and Buenaventura. About 6,600 people live here, spread across four main towns — Galeana, the county seat; Colonia LeBarón; Lagunitas; and La Angostura — and dozens of ranches, at 1,400 metres with the sierra on the horizon and the Río Santa María running through the valley. What you see from the road is pecan trees: 8,345 hectares, the fifth-largest planting in the state. People come for the harvest from October to December, for the Feria de la Amistad in July, for the rodeo and patron-saint fiestas, or as a stop on the way to Paquimé. In LeBarón, you can also get by in English.

La temporada de nuezPecan season

sepoctnoviembrenovemberdic

From late September to December, the valley goes to work. Mechanical shakers clamp each trunk and rattle it for a few seconds; the nuts come down like hail, sweepers rake them into rows, and trucks head for the shelling plants. November is the peak, with the leaves already gold and the best light of the year.

Chihuahua grows more than half of Mexico's pecans, and Galeana has 8,345 hectares of orchards, fifth in the state. Highway 10 runs the length of that strip: Colonia LeBarón, La Angostura and Lagunitas sit between rows of trees that run off toward the sierra. Rolling the window down and driving slowly is the outing.

One thing to be clear about: the orchards are private farms, and during harvest heavy machinery is on the move. Don't walk in uninvited. To see the harvest up close, write ahead to Galeana Valley Pecan in La Angostura or to Nogaleros Unidos Tecnificados, which manages orchards in the area [CONFIRM whether they host visitors]. And ask around for freshly harvested nuts: no retail sales are advertised, but it is the season [CONFIRM where to buy].

Water is the valley's big question. A mature pecan tree drinks about 500 litres a day for eight months, and the Buenaventura aquifer is among the most overdrawn in Chihuahua.

Colonia LeBarón was founded in 1924, when Alma Dayer LeBaron arrived with two wives and eight children to start a fundamentalist Mormon settlement apart from the mainstream church. It grew on pecans, cattle and trade, speaking English at home and Spanish at school. In 2009 the community refused to pay ransom for a kidnapped teenager and marched to Chihuahua City to demand his return; he came home, and two months later Benjamín LeBarón and Luis Widmar were killed for having spoken out. On 4 November 2019, on a road near Bavispe, Sonora, an attack killed three women and six children of the LeBarón, Langford and Miller families. The community buried its dead at home, marched for peace, stayed, kept farming and grew.
